I was of two minds about survival anyway. I didn't want to die, I didn't want pain, but what was the point? Everyone else was dead. Deigo had been dead for days.
His name was right on my lips. I almost whispered it aloud. Instead, I gripped my skull with both hands and tried to think about something that wouldn't hurt.

You decide to be alone
And, hell, it's cold enough to hibernate
So let it drift into the snow
It's where she chooses how to operate

Might be time to pack her in
Set the sails and just get hauled away
Maybe east or something
West was overrated anyway

The storm's coming down
These old walls are wearing thin
There's an ache to this town
And something's gotta give

If we're digging for gold
And coming up dry
Just a matter of time
Just a matter of time

But it didn't feel like I had a choice. I headed sount in a flat-out sprint again. I had to go get Diego. Drag him away if it came to that. We could catch up with Fred. Or take off on our own. We needed to run. I would tell Diego how Riley had lied. He would see that Riley had no intention of helping us fight the battle he'd set up. There was no reason to help him anymore.
And then I heard the snarling and screaming and screeching explode from ahead and I knew thefight was happening and I was too late to beat Diego there. I only ran faster. May I could still save him.

All the survivors singing in the rain
I was the one with the world at my feet
Got us a battle
Leave it up to me

Find us a trap door
Find us a plane
Tell the survivors help is on the way

I was a blindfold

All the survivors singing in the rain

"You're not going?"
Fred shook his head. "Of course not. It's obvious we're not being told what we need to know. I'm not going to be Riley's pawn... I'm out. I'm going to explore on my won, see the world."

Kristie and Raoul growled, both of their companies followed suit immediately. I was surprised to see it, but they did look like an army in that moment. Not that theu were marching in formation or anything, but there was just something uniform about the repsonse. Like they all were part of one big organism.
pages 133-134
It took them a minute, but everyone started to realize that this was is, and they got quieter and more fierce. I could see that the idea of a real fight p of being not only allowed but encouraged to rip and burn - was almost as exciting as hunting. It appealed to people like Raoul and Jen and Sara.

We are ready for the siege
We are armed up to the teeth
Be careful how you live and breathe
Release whats broken underneath

How many times do you wanna die?
How many ways do you wanna die?

To feel safe again
Look over your shoulder
Very carefully
Look over your shoulder

We can laugh about it now
We hope everything works out
Be careful how you lick your wounds
Believe that change is coming soon

How many times do you wanna die?
How many ways do you wanna die?

To feel safe again
Look over your shoulder
Very carefully
Look over your shoulder

You used to do a little but a little won't fly
Right before you hit your prime
That's when we fell in love but not the first time

Can it please you still
Renaming your father's will?
Or does it make you ill?
Let us bruise their knees
We will aim straight for the feed
You will be relieved
So relieved
So relieved
To the floor
It was I
Feel the sparks of the friendly fire
Misery inspires
Your throat has been cut several times before
Before
Never noticed the size of the flow
It can't be ignored
To feel safe again
Look over your shoulder
Carefully look over your shoulder

You said you believe but believing won't fly
Right before you hit your prime
That's when we fell in love but not the first time

And when its all over and you open your eyes
And it still wont turn on inside
And you'll be lying by a note on the floor side

The royal we
The royal we
The royal we
The royal we
The royal we
The royal we
The royal we
The royal we
Love the royal we

His face was not twisted in rage, the way it usually was when he was angry; it was calm and cold, smooth and beautiful, his mouth curled at the edges into a small smile. I suddenly had the impression that this was a new Riley. Something had changed him, hardened him, but I couldn't imagine what could have happened in one night to create that cruel, perfect smile.

Young, dumb

Stare like a hoodlum
Simple as this
I'm in love with the risk
I know what I've done
But tell me, what did I miss?
So, please don't save something
Waste not
Save nothing
Lose the halo
No need to resist
A lick of the lips and my grip on your hips

Sick, sick, sick
Don't resist
Sick, sick, sick
Don't resist

First thing we succumb to
Shall erase and undo days of unrelease
If there's no police
Then race to slip into whatever fits you
Make something
Make someone
Beg on a knee
Baby, baby please
Pout your bottom lip
While crackin the whip
You know what we want is
Candy to come too

Sick, sick, sick
Don't resist
Sick, sick, sick
Don't resist
Sick, sick, sick
Don't resist
Sick, sick, sick

Eternal eclipse in the teeth of the risk
The tounge is a twist in perpetual bliss
Forever midnight forever midnight

And I suddenly realized something stupendously obvious. It was the solution that had tickled the edges of my understanding before, when I was tracking the vampire herd to this place with Diego...
We didn't have to come back the other night! We shouldn't have! Why hadn't I thought of it then...?
We could disappear, and Riley would have to make do with nineteen vampires, or make some new ones quick. Either way, not our problem.
I couldn't wait to tell Diego my plan. My guy instinct was that he would feel the same. Hopefully.

I would meet you
Would you meet me?

2, 3, 4

On a park bench
On a skyscrape
On a mountain
Oh yeah, whatever it takes
I would meet you
Would you meet me?

I'm glad to say that we've met
But I'm sad to say that the circumstances weren't on our side

So go on
Go on be your own
Go on be your own star

What if we could?
Where would we go?
If it felt right
Would you want me to know?
I would meet you
Would you meet me?

It's like a last chance for a first dance
You're a sunrise
Can't somehow exist
I would meet you
Would you meet me?

I'm glad to say that we've met
But I'm sad to say that the circumstances weren't on our side

So go on
Go on be your own
Go on be your own star

A superstar in my eyes
In my eyes

Look in my eyes
Just look in my eyes
My eyes
My eyes

What if we could put our lives on hold

Riley had better control of them than I had thought possible.
Still, it was mostly repetitiion. I had noticed Riley saying the same things over and over and over again. Work together, watch your back, don't go at her head-on; work together, watch your back, don't go at him head-on; work together, watch your back, don't go at her head-on. It was kind of ridiculous, really, and made the group seem exceptionally stupid. But I was sureI would have been just as stupid if I'd been in the thick of the fight with them rather than watching calmly from the sidelines with Fred.
I t reminded me in a way of how Riley had drilled into us our fear of the sun. Constant repetition.

We lack the motion to move to the new beat

It's here for us to admire if we can afford the beauty of it
Can afford the luxury of turning our heads
Adjust that thousand dollars smile and behold the creation of man
Great words won't cover ugly actions
Good frames won't save bad paintings

We lack the motion to move to the new beat
Yeah, we lack motion
When the day is over
Hey, the doors are locked on us
Money buys the access
And we can't pay the cost
And how can we expect anyone to listen if we are using the same old voice?
We need new noise
New art for the real people

We dance to all the wrong songs
We enjoy all the wrong moves
We dance to all the wrong songs
We're not leading
We dance to all the wrong songs
We enjoy all the wrong moves
We dance to all the wrong songs
We're not, we're not, we're not, we're not, we're not, we're not leading

We dance all the wrong songs

We dance all the wrong songs
We enjoy all the wrong moves
We dance all the wrong songs

We dance to all the wrong songs
We enjoy all the wrong moves
We dance to all the wrong songs

Deigo grinned at me, his face beautiful with light, and suddenly, with a deep lurch in my stomach, I realized that the whole BFF thing was way off the mark. For me anyway. It was just that fast.
His grin siftened a little bit into just the hint of a smile. His eyes were wide like mine. All awe and lights. He touched my facem the way he'd touched my hand, as if he was trying to understand the shine.
"So pretty," he said. He left his hand against my cheek.

"I see the little girl made it too," said a new voice, and I shuddered because it was Raoul. I felt a little bit of relied that he didn't know my name, but mostly I just felt horrified that he'd noticed me at all.
"Yeah, she followed me." I couldn't see Diego, but I knew he was shrugging.
"Aren't you the saviour of the hour?" Raoul said snidely.
"We don't get ectra points for being morons..."
"Interesting attitude you got, Deigo. You think that Riley likes you so much he's gonna care if I kill you. I think you're wrong. But either way, for tonight, he already thinks you're dead."

I had a good friend
I could only destroy
And lovers I loved less
Than anybody could afford

Yes, but this old rocking horse
Just nods his head
And he's gonna rock back and forth
The way that he always did

Baby, don't you bother
Tasting the water
And baby, don't you bother
Coming closer to me

Can you see my eyes?
They're half the size

We sat in silence, pondering this. I mostly thought about how much I didn't know. And why hadn't I worried about everything I didn't know before now? It was like talking to Diego had cleared my head. For the first time in three months, blood was not the main thing in there.

Oh

We were born in the desert
We were reared in a cave
We conquered in the sun
But we lived in the shade
Yeah, baby, we were savage
We existed to kill
Our history is damaged
At least it was a thrill

But now we can see
Now that our vision is strong
We don't have to admit we were wrong
Now we can see
But the images don't stick
Our enemies lay dead on the ground
And still we kick

Oh

Now we can see the warnings and the signs
Reading between the lines like writing on the wall
Now we can see
What do we need?
We should need nothing, nothing at all

We were born on an island
We grew out of the sand
Never saw another creature
Never knew another man
Yeah, baby, we were nothing
We existed for less
Our present was empty
Our history a mess

But now we can see
Now we do as we please
Now we do away with our disease
Now we can see
Now the image sticks
We still need the medicine quick
We still take the pill
But only for the fix

Now we can see
The warnings and the signs
Reading between the lines like writing on the wall
Now we can see
What do we need?
We should need nothing, nothing at all

Oh

Yeah, now we can see

I turned off my brain. It was time to hunt. I took a deep breath, drawing in the scnet of blood inside the humans below. They weren't the only humans around, but they were the closest. Who you were going to hunt was the kind of decision you had to make before you scented your prey. It was too late now to choose anything.

Eclipse – Chapter 25 - Bree's perspective
After a second of fruitless searching, my gaze crept back to the young female vampire. She was still watching me, her eyes half-mad.
I met the girl's stare for a long moment. Chin-length dark hair framed her face, which was alabaster pale. It was hard to tell if her features were beautiful, twisted as they were by rage and thirst. The feral read eyes were dominant—hard to look away from. She glared at me viciously, shuddering and writhing every few seconds.

The sound of the thudding music that greeted my approach was accompanied by the unmistakeable sweet, smoky scent of a burning vampire. My panic went into overdrive. I could just as easily die inside the house as outside.
